My Birthday @ Clarke Quay

Went to Clarke Quay for my birthday celebration with my girlfriend. Taken some photos along the way to the Brewerks pub. It's a pleasure walk and i captured some scenes that i would like to share here.

A weird dome, there are 2 weird domes in the "The Central" shopping center for shoppers to rest. I do not really understand why in the shopping centre they built a shelter for that.

Fake Leg. real or fake leg??? My girlfriend spotted this fake leg in the resting area.

Love letter?! I don't know where the people get this love shape paper and write on it then hang it in the fence, we are trying to get one, but can't find the papers ...

There are many people along the street even though it is not a weekend. We enjoy our long awaited stroll along the street. On the most left hand side, can any person see the Brewerks banner (Please click the photo to see ...)? That is the pub we are heading to ...

I like B&W photos, recently, i shot a lot of B&W photos. Personally, i think B&W will provide clean subject explosion effect which color photo difficult to present.
Beautiful Night scene along the Clarke Quay and The Central Shopping centre

Waiting for my girlfriend during the toilet session, i took a photo for myself ...the scene behind my image is mixed with the background behind me and the opposite outside as I'm standing in front of the window at 3rd floor.

I took this photos from the 3rd floor, these 2 persons spotted me when i point my camera to them. As the shutter speed is slow and the photo is taken behind the window, these person looked like superimposed on the background and the background scene can still be seen, i like this kind of virtual effect even though it's not a sharp clean photo.

Canon Hanging on to Mirrors Means Opportunity for Sony, Panasonic Cameras

Read this articles from Bloomberg website today, and also see the quote: "As a result, Canon and Nikon’s combined share of the Japanese market has fallen by 35 percent, while Sony’s share has doubled, according to estimates at research firm BCN Inc.", this tally again with the market data that i posted earlier on. Even though Sony is not using MFT standard for their camera, but they actually engage the mirrorless design in the NEX system, so i guess the NEX system is quite a success in Sony.

The difficulties that i think Canon and Nikon is facing are :
  1. If they adopt a new mirrorless design, are they going to use APS-C sensor or smaller sensor size? (This is going to affect the current lenses design, ain't?)
  2. Is their previous range of lenses design to be able to support their new system? As to achieve small in size for the Mirrorless Interchangeable Lenses (MIL) system, normal current practice is contrast detection instead of phase detection. Lesson learn from the recent new products from Olympus and Panasonic is that in order to speed up the focus speed, they improve a lot of their design in the new lenses. If Canon have to roll out a new series of lenses, that means that they have 2 different interchangeable system to support, that is going to add some complexity to the business strategy. Dilemma in strategic planning to continue support legacy products and new products based on different technologies ....

. I think it's time for Canon and Nikon to think a new business strategy to enter into the new Mirrorless Interchangeable Market to prevent any regret in the future.

Comment on new Sony NEX-7

Just read the news from dpreview that Sony will be launching NEX-7. The outlook is combination of retro, like Fujifilm X100 and modern style. I think this is a killer camera ... and seriously the on paper specification is really stunning. Some of the strength of the camera that i think will give much pressure to Panasonic and Olympus are:

  1. 24Mega pixels APS-C sensor, I guess dynamic range and noise will be improved tremendously.
  2. Built in 2.4M Electronic View Finder (EVF). Currently, the highest resolution EVF is belong to Panasonic Lumix GH2, which is around 1.5M dots. The quality is a big leap over other competitor.
  3. In-camera photo correction. Previous lenses problem, i.e. chromatic abberation and distortion, can be corrected in the camera.
  4. built in flash which is not seen in the previous NEX system.
  5. all the good things come under one "compact" size camera which is around 300grams.

with the above features, i think the NEX-7 will really bring a lot of impact to the growing Mirrorless Interchangeable Lenses (MIL) system camera and of course it's in my wish list, BUT i think it's not gonna cheap ....

Mirrorless Interchangeable Lenses (MIL) Camera Market Data

Not too long ago, I read some marketing data from IDC shows that Mirrorless Interchangeable Lenses (MIL) camera shipments from 2008 to 2010 has been growing and IDC also projects that DSLR market will be eroded by MIL market from 2011 to 2014. According to IDC, MIL shipments in 2009, 2010, and 2011 are expected to be 449K units, 1.53mn units and 5.40mn units respectively. With the strong momentum to switch to MIL, it is also optimistic that MIL is to surpass DSLR in 2013.

this is an interesting information, as Panasonic Lumix and Olympus Pen system camera are the market leader in Mirrorless Interchangeable Lenses (MIL) market. Let's see whether they will dominate in interesting MIL market.
